RV FEATURE LICENSING Any vehicle with a GVM of 4500kg or less can be driven on a standard car licence. Motorhome manufacturers understandably use this in their marketing. A vehicle with a GVM of higher than 4500kg (but less than 8000kg) will require a Light Rigid driver’s licence – other licence categories apply above 8000kg GVM. Interestingly – and some might say ridiculously – a caravan and tow vehicle with a combined ATM/ GVM of greater than 4500kg, not to mention a greater overall length than a motorhome, can be operated on a standard car licence. No training or special licence endorsement is required. Fair? You decide. Bewildering? A little. / 15
