RV FEATURE A caravan on the scales of Weigh Station, a mobile caravan weighing service (pic: Ian McCallum) Putting too much tension into these springs will redistribute too much weight from the towball back to the trailer's axles, increasing the chances of getting the wobbles. Insufficient tension may make the steering feel vague and unresponsive. If you feel any instability or poor handling when driving your rig, stop immediately and adjust your WDH accordingly. Exceeding the GTM of the trailer can lead to damaged suspension, broken stub axles, sheared wheel nuts or blown tyres. If any of these occur while the rig is travelling at speed, a serious crash will likely be the result. MOBILE WEIGH-IN So how do you know if you've got this weight distribution correct? Unfortunately, unless you have unlimited time to access a weighbridge, it will be nearly impossible to do by yourself. Fortunately, help is at hand. Several new companies are offering a mobile caravan weighing service. They have very sophisticated portable scales that can be brought to you to ascertain the total weight of your rig and how the load is distributed. 10 \ Once they've weighed your rig, they can advise you on what steps you can take to redistribute your load, reset your WDH or change the height of your towball to obtain a perfectly balanced rig.
