RV FEATURE THE POWER BILL The downside of buying into solar blanket technology is the cost – it’s considerable. Of the three tiers of current solar tech starting with fixed solar panels, followed by portable folding solar panels (which use the same technology), and finally solar blankets, the fixed system is cheapest. A typical high quality fixed 150W panel retails for around $500, while a comparable fold-out panel will cost around $600. An entry level solar blanket of 115W, meanwhile, will cost about $1200. A 190W solar blanket will run you over $2000. However, the solar blanket option is arguably best in terms of portability, usability, ease of storage, weight and, potentially, longevity. Store a blanket properly, keep it safe and clean, and the word is you could expect a 10 to 20-year lifespan out of a quality product.
