CHRISTMAS AT THE TOP MARTY LEDWICH, WWW.RVEETHEREYET.COM IS THIS THE ULTIMATE FESTIVE-SEASON HOLIDAY DESTINATION? It’s about this time of the year that our thoughts turn to the Christmas and New Year period and finding a suitable holiday destination. For many families, it’s the same place every year but that can get quite mundane. If you're like Kylie and I, you like to mix it up occasionally. The problem is, by the time you've gotten around to finding a place that interests you, it’s likely to be fully booked. What's worse, if you do manage to find somewhere that has availability, the chances are it will be packed out, making it a less-than-peaceful festive getaway. However, I reckon we've found the perfect Christmas holiday destination: Darwin. ARE YOU NUTS? Straight away I can hear the chorus shouting, ‘Are you nuts?’ Darwin is miles away from anywhere, December to January is right at the peak of the build-up to the wet season, it’s frightfully hot and humid, and didn't they have a cyclone on Christmas Day one year? Yes… I’ll admit Darwin during this time of year has its drawbacks. But think about the positives. As far as visitors and holidaymakers are concerned, the place is virtually deserted. The caravan parks, of which there are several, are empty, meaning you get all the facilities to yourself. The national parks are brimming with life from the rains and, thanks to the lack of visitors, you can get photos of the famous landmarks with no annoying photo- bombers. What’s more, Darwin is a fantastic, modern city with loads of bars and restaurants all offering great food from all over the world. The place is steeped in history, particularly from the World War II years, with lots of fantastic, preserved sites to visit. And Darwin sports some family- friendly amusements that should keep the kids entertained for hours. What more do you want? Mindil Beach sunset 30 gorv.com.au
