LEXUS LX 450D After years of promising us it would not offer a diesel Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand did just that in 2018 with the LX 450d. There’s no shame in it, because what you have is a very sophisticated Lexus version of the Land Cruiser 200 Series turbo-diesel for not a lot more cash. Gear like height-adjustable suspension, a large tablet-style infotainment screen, wireless charging, easy access for seats and steering column, smart key card, rear sun blinds and leather-wrapped dashboard and centre console are the things you get in the Lexus that are missing in the big Cruiser. At $134,290 (plus on- road costs), the Lexus isn’t cheap, but it’s only $14K more expensive than the Land Cruiser Sahara – not a lot of money at the premium end of the market, when you consider that Range Rover starts at $190K (although the Merzcedes- Benz GLS-class diesel kicks-off at $117K (before options). The big Lexus is very stable with a heavy caravan hitched up and its ride quality makes it a great tourer over those long outback transport stages between camps. Performance is very good, too, although once you’re towing a van weighing much more than around 2500kg, the big V8 diesel gets thirsty, consuming more than 20L/100km.
