Last month, we took a detailed look at the true meaning of
the various weight restrictions imposed on tow vehicles
by their manufacturers. This month, we’ve turned our
spotlight on the weight restrictions of caravans – which
also apply to other trailers, such as campers.

Why this lengthy focus on weight restrictions and their
meanings? Well, not too long ago I received an email
from a reader questioning how a van’s payload capacity
was calculated. The reader was adamant it was not the
difference between Tare and ATM. I begged to differ.

that these issues continue to cause confusion. With the
RV lifestyle growing ever-more popular, there’s every
reason to expect the confusion to grow with it. Our job,
therefore, is to keep the correct information coming. If

hurts to brush up on these things – and then pass it on
