SURFING DUNES
When you’re not relaxing van-side at the park,
or exploring the many shopping opportunities of
Forster, you’re probably at one of the beaches. A
recommendation from another park guest saw us
visit the huge sand dunes of One Mile Beach. Our
adventurous children slid down those dunes for
hours while my wife and I enjoyed the view from
the top. (My wife spotted what she believed to
be a whale breaching in the distance. To me, the
creature’s white underside and grey fins made
it look distinctly shark-like – and the arrival of a
lifeguard with binoculars seemed to confirm my
suspicion. We watched as a surfer quickly paddled
in after said creature breached about 100m from his
position.) Main Beach, meanwhile, offers an ‘ocean
bath’ safe swimming area.
Eventually, reality set in and it was time to hitch up
and make the trip back to Melbourne. Once upon
a time, Coffs Harbour was our go-to destination in
this neck of the woods. But now, we have a new
contender. And when we return, Lani’s Holiday
Island will be our base. Highly recommended.
This island beach is popular with boaters and kayakers.
