GROSS CONFUSED MASS
MANAGING EDITOR
Max Taylor
Queensland daily The Courier Mail gave the proverbial
hornet’s nest a good kicking on August 21 when it published
an article claiming the Queensland government was on
the cusp of banning upgrades to vehicles’ Gross Combined
Mass. Social media went into a tailspin, press releases
from various stakeholders flew, clarifications were sent,
and even that state’s relevant minister quickly denied the
whole thing.

Was this episode the result of poor governmental
communications, sensationalist reporting, or a little of
both? Hard to tell.

It did, however, serve to highlight the confusion surrounding
these issues. Wherever the breakdown occurred, a simple
fact remains: without clear, consistent information from
the relevant authorities that spell out the rules, problems
like this will continue. Otherwise, what chance does Mr
and Mrs Smith, with their D-Max and 3500kg ATM offroad
caravan, have?
As part of my driver’s licence test (all those years ago),
I had to study a book produced by VicRoads. This book
was an authoritative resource that gave me the information
I needed to understand the road rules. Wouldn’t it be a
beautiful thing if our eight state/territory governments
produced a similar resource for caravanners? Just a little
book we can have in our gloveboxes that we can all refer
to in moments of confusion or dispute.
Alas, I suspect that would just be too sensible.
