How much gear do you pack when you hit the road?
A difficult question, I know. It depends on where you’ll
be going, for how long, etc. But every vanner has their
essentials, the things they just have to jam into the tunnel
boot, under the van’s bed and on the 4WD’s roof rack.
Full-time caravanners the Millward family (aka Four
Hands in a Tin Can) have given us their 10 must-
haves, and I’m sure you’d have a few to add to the list.
Personally, I wouldn’t set off without a shovel, a set
of MaxTraxx, my portable air-compressor, tools… oh,
and the portable toilet – our camper doesn’t have an
onboard bathroom (worse luck, especially since we have
three kids) so we have to cope with Thetford’s finest and
a pop-up tent.
On a side note, why are these pop-up tents so difficult
– no, impossible – to fit back into their original bag? Try
as we might, ours simply won’t go. We’ve given up and
now and simply fold it into a figure eight, squeeze it, and
wrap electrical wire around it to keep it from springing
back open. But I digress.
