We always carry a small
supply of firewood, a packet
of firelighters and a box of
matches to get a fire started
– if you are camping in a
national park, gather your
main logs before you enter.
We carry a lithium-battery
cordless chainsaw because
it’s clean, easy and doesn’t
require another fuel source.
We also ensure we travel
with at least one means of
emergency communication
other than our phones,
whether it be a satphone or
emergency beacon like the
Spot tracker, and leave a
rough plan of our intended
travels and times with friends
and/or family.
Finally, when we get home,
we don’t go overboard with a
high-pressure hose cleaning
everything down. Most of
these water ‘guns’ are capable
of peeling off your van’s
original decals, which are
costly and time consuming
to replace.
