INSIDE THE BOX : By Jonathan Schwab Cruz Digs Beneath Surface with LHU Football After the curtain fell on Lock Haven University football’s best divisional season since 1979, they went back to work.   Now, Carmelo Cruz has taken fans behind that curtain.   Cruz, a four year member of the Bald Eagle football program, has constructed the Grind to Greatness series of videos, a behind-the-scenes view of LHU football’s offseason process. He credited a similar series about professional football for sparking his idea. “The videos were inspired by the HBO 'Hard Knocks' series, which highlights NFL training camps every year,” Cruz said. “I thought it would be a great way to highlight some of the ins-and-outs of LHU football.” Cruz has been working as an intern in Sports Information Director Doug Spata- fore’s office. He quickly learned how challenging his vision would be. “What stuck with me the most was how time consuming the process was to make a two-to-four minute video,” Cruz said. “I would say about 75 percent of my time was spent cutting up and editing film.” He cited the influence of Spatafore and his graduate assistants as a major supporting factor in successfully develop- ing the video series. “The graduate assistants, Matt (Guiod) and Jeff (Ross), have helped me out tremendously in learning some different software (and) programs which have made releasing the videos an easier process,” Cruz said. The Lancaster native said his plan was to release five videos total, culminating in coverage of the football program’s April 22nd spring game. He pointed to a moment from the third of those five videos as his favorite. “The individual one v. one clips between the defensive backs and wide receivers and defensive/offensive lines show the high degree of competitiveness during LHU football practices,” Cruz said.
