B ald E agle TRUCK STOP Celebrate Mutts! "In every heart, there is a hole. In every shelter, there is love in which to fill it. - Colleeen Paige National Mutt Day is a twice a year ob- servance, July 31st and December 2nd, that encourages us to embrace, save, and celebrate mixed breed dogs. Also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day, it was created in 2005 by Celebrity Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation. As many as 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. The biggest percentage of dogs aban- doned and euthanized is due to the constant over-breeding and public desire of designer dogs and pure bred puppies that are sold to pet stores supplied by puppy mills, which often produce ill and horribly neglected animals. Pure breeds that end up in the shel- ter are generally rescued quicker than mutts, by either the public wanting a “less expen- sive” pure bred dog or by a pure breed res- cue. Some people may not know that mixed breed dogs can actually be healthier, better behaved, and live longer. They are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs, too, such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue, and guiding the blind. So please visit your local shelter and find a new friend! If you can't adopt a mixed breed friend on July 31st or December 2nd, please donate what you can - time, money, or effort - to your lo- cal animal shelter, as they usually need all the help they can get! You can also volunteer to walk a dog, or donate food and other supplies to your local animal shelter or rescue. Post on social media using #NationalMuttDay and encourage others to join in. And don't forget to take some time to recognize and celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual mutt! - Snacks & Supplies - Pizza - Hershey’s Ice Cream - ATM available Now with a NEW Grab & Go Bar! -Travel Center - Laundy Facilities - Showers - Overnight Parking for Truckers OPEN 24 HOURS! 570-769-6455 612 McElhattan Drive, McElhattan Just off the McElhattan/Woolrich exit of Route 220.
