A Note From The Editor : As I am writing this column, I am also scrolling through Facebook, reading all the alarming stories about Hurricane Harvey, and the chaos it's wreaking on everyone and everything in Texas. The loss of human life is tragic. The destruction of so many homes and businesses is also difficult to fathom. But people affected by such disasters who were blessed enough to escape with their lives (and whose family and friends are safe, too) usually say, "Stuff can be replaced." Unfortunately, that's not true of pets, and many of them are left behind in emergency situations like this. Most evacuation centers will not allow animals, so people have little or no choice, as awful as that may be. Reports say that dogs displaced by Harvey are going into shelters at the rate of 60 per hour, and that will probably increase exponentially if the storm lingers much longer. And that's just dogs. What about cats, birds, horses, etc.? Thank God for people and pet rescues and shelters that come to the aid of these families and their animals. Sadly, there aren't nearly enough of them, and many operate by the seat of their pants, financially. As usual, crises on this scale can bring out the best in us - there are so many stories of people going above and beyond for folks they don't even know: A fellow by the name of "Mattress Mack" opened up his Gallery Furniture locations in Houston as pet-friendly relief shelters for the displaced. A couple named Ralph and Tamara Hampton put out a post on Facebook, offering their property (3 1/2 hours north of Humble, TX) to any- one with horses who needed a place for them to stay. They even extended their generous gesture to allow people to bring a camper if they wanted to be with their animals. Austin Pets Alive is just one of the many rescues and shelters working around the clock to save pets that were deserted. They are in desper- ate need of fosters, and anticipate dealing with the issue of displaced pets over the next few months due to Hurricane Harvey. Prayers for the people and pets of Texas, and thanks to everyone coming to their aid.
