INSIDE THE BOX : By Jonathan Schwab The Meaningless, Fascinating Exercise of Preseason Polls The anticipation builds with each passing day. When the moment finally comes, fans rejoice or recoil. Then there’s still two weeks to an actual game. Preseason polls signal a landmark moment in the lead-up to the beginning of a new season in all sports at all levels. The most intense fanbases carry themselves from the unveiling of a poll to the kickoff of a fresh campaign, simply evaluating their program’s place in the pecking order. Until the counting numbers are measured by a scoreboard and not first place votes, does any of it really matter? Of course not. If anything, it tells us that coaches are so im- mersed in doing their jobs well and managing their own programs, they have no idea how their program will actually compare to their conference rivals until it plays out on the field. The razor thin margins that decide games are impossible to predict before a kick, a swing, or a throw. Last season, LHU football was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC East. East Stroudsburg was picked to place fifth and received one first place vote. By the time Lock Haven had finished thrashing ESU, 66-41, in November, the Bald Eagles had completed a 4-3 divisional campaign good enough for a tie for third place. After their best divisional season since 1979, Lock Haven was picked in this season’s preseason poll to place - wait for it - sixth. Fortunately, it’s September now. No more preseason window dressing, Lock Haven football, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country have all left the guesswork behind and begun their respective seasons. That can only mean one thing. Less than two months until the preseason basketball polls. , Inc. The area's finest selection of collectibles!
