Can We Join Your Family? R ichard & N athen N ikita Children Waiting For A Home... Richard, 11, dreams of becoming an engineer, and designing big buildings. His passion for building led him to create a model of the Titanic after reading books about it. Now an expert on the Titanic, he loves to share facts about the ship with others. He is a big fan of Legos, which allows him to indulge his love for designing and building. If he had three wishes, they would be to go on a vacation, play quarterback on a football team, and to be adopted. Nathen, 12, envisions a career as a quarterback for a professional team, and can frequently be found on the football field, or in t he neighborhood honing his skills. A music fan, he was delighted to receive a small drum for Christmas, and is looking forward to beginning lessons. If he had three wishes, they would be to play professional football, be adopted, and visit China, because he thinks it’s a “cool place.” Richard and Nathen reside in the same foster home, and are very close. They need to be adopted together. Their ideal family would be a mom and a dad who would share their enthusiasm for playing sports and attending sporting events. Nikita is a friendly, charismatic, spunky 6 year old who delights in being the center of at- tention. Very intelligent, she loves to talk. Her favorite pastimes are singing and dancing, and she loves to go shopping. Despite her young age, Nikita is already thinking about her future. When she grows up, she wants to be a princess, like her favorite, Princess Tiana. Nikita also would like to be a mommy. In kindergarten, Nikita benefits from special educa- tion services. She is proud of being named Student of the Month in February. She likes that there are boys in the school. If Nikita had three wishes, they would be to have a doll, go to a fast food restaurant, and to go shopping for toys. Nikita needs a patient, loving, committed family that will provide a structured, stable environment for her, and give her the one-on-one attention she craves. It would be best if she is the youngest, or only child, in the home. Nikita looks forward to having a forever family that she can go shopping and eating out with. There are 104,000 children nationwide waiting to be adopted. These are not the healthy infants usually associated with adoption. They are older; some have physical, emotional or mental challenges. Others are brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. More than half of the children are from minority cultures. They all need the love and security that only a permanent family can provide. These are the children for whom the National Adoption Center works.
