Journalism by Carolyn Pavelkis
I wanted this poster to speak to the importance
of the First Amendment and freedom of the
press by calling attention to the work that
professional journalists do every day, even
while under fire, providing a necessary check/
balance in our complex society. Visually, I
composited the front pages of newspapers from
the 2016-17 election year as a background, then
used a silhouette of the Statue of Liberty to
represent freedom. The typography is
positioned to represent a newspaper nameplate,
further reinforcing the overall concept.
Carolyn is a photographer/designer from
Chicago, passionate about coffee, yoga, travel
and local living. Her design style is heavily
influenced by both modern and post-modern
design, notably Massimo Vignelli and David
Carson. She believes in pushing the envelope,
that good design matters, and in the necessity of
using one's talents to bolster one's community.
