the street is at the core of where the trend
in the active lifestyle sunglasses market is
going, starting in The Golden State. “It is
really a California lifestyle that is shaping
styles around the world,” adds Perkinson.
“They enjoy mountains, beaches, deserts,
golf and everything in between. Creating
a lens technology that adapts to different
light levels in these different environments
that is at the same time using fashions from
the street using a palette of frame styles and
colors is the market trend. Being able to go
from gol¿ ng to an activity in town to beach
biking to casual activities is strong”.
Concerning current trends regarding
frames, Jenny Gordillo, Costa Sunglasses
International, Sales Manager, states: “We
have seen a shift from higher wrapped
around sunglasses to À atter styles. Customer
preference is moving towards more versatile
frames that blend performance with style, as
customers are becoming more educated and
interested in protecting their eyes without
compromising style and comfort.”
Even if one offers the full gambit of
technical components including tinting,
polarization,
photochromic
lenses,
mirroring, scratch-resistant coating, anti-
reÀ ective coating, UV coating, it remains
very important for a golfer to feel a personal
sense of style and manufacturers are aware
of this. Never before have sunglasses both
on and off the course been available in
such a wide range of frame colors and lens
tint options. “White (frames) has been
popular for a while and continues to grow
incrementally every year. Vivid colors like
greens and yellows are attracting more
adventurous wearers,” Katz explained. “We
are starting to see the emergence of clear
frames, both as standalones as well as with
solid color temples (arms) or vice versa. It
is a fringe thing right now but is gaining
momentum.” “Black and brown are still the
biggest sellers, but what you are seeing are a
lot more golfers spicing it up to match their
out¿ ts,” adds Perkinson. “The trend these
days are for signi¿ cantly more color options
for frames including clear, white, blue, red,
yellow, silver and white which is a big seller
particularly in the summer time.” With the
dizzying array of choices, it is enough to
give one a headache, but that won’t happen
if you apply the same diligence to your next
pair of sunglasses as you do to your sand
wedge. Look for substance in addition to
fashion, it will be worth it.
