alfway through the 2017 PGTI season, three main
contenders have emerged in the PGTI Emerging Player
of the Year race.
Leading the pack is Kolkata-based rookie Viraj Madappa who
has so far amassed earnings of Rs. 1,92,085. Madappa has been
the most consistent among the rookies having posted a tied

fourth at the Pune Open as well as two other ¿ nishes inside
the top-35. The 19-year-old Madappa, currently 35th in the
PGTI Order of Merit, is certainly one of the frontrunners in the
Emerging Player contest.
South African Damian Naicker, currently second in the
Emerging Player list with earnings of Rs. 1,63,150, is also
likely to mount a serious challenge for the title in the back half
of the season. Naicker displayed his mettle with a creditable
tied fourth ¿ nish at the Pune Open.
Bengaluru’s Jaibir Singh is placed third in the Emerging Player
list with earnings of Rs. 1,21,120 thanks to his two top-30
¿ nishes this year. Jaibir, who posted a top-10 in his debut PGTI
event while still an amateur last year, has the ability to spring a
surprise in the second half of the season.
