PGTI mourns passing away of the legendary Peter Thomson PETER THOMSON Peter Thomson 5 times British Open champion (1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965). he Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) mourned the passing away of Australian gol¿ ng legend Peter Thomson. had a special connection with India. He played a key role in helping put India on the international gol¿ ng map through his efforts in establishing the Indian Open. Thomson, who passed away aged 88, in Melbourne, Australia, on June 20th, 2018, was a ¿ ve-time British Open champion (1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965). He is among only four men who have won the British Open for three years in succession. During his numerous trips to Europe and the United States, Thomson would always try to make a stopover in India, which was one of his favourite countries. He encouraged many other international golfers to come and play in India. He also gradually convinced the authorities in India to launch the Indian Open. Thomson, who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988, also Thomson went on to win the inaugural edition of the Indian Open in 1964 and Convinced the authorities in India to launch the Indian Open. followed that up with two more victories at the event in 1966 and 1976.
