“It happened a long long time ago,” Melinda
began. “It happened two hundred years ago when
magical folk and humans lived in the same world.”
“Mom, you never told me this before,” Terry said.
“I didn’t tell you because you were too young to
understand,” Melinda replied. “Let me continue.”
Terry and Pansy were hanging onto Melinda’s
every word.
“There was a bad witch who planned to turn the
animals against humans,” Melinda continued. “But
a young girl, Lorna, helped the good witch to defeat
the evil witch, and then the good witch exiled the
evil one to another realm. The good witch built a
portal between worlds that only animals and
humans with magical powers could cross.”
“Good!” Terry said.
Melinda continued, “When they celebrated their
victory, the animals asked the good witch to give
Lorna the power to talk to animals. She did, and the
reason why we can talk to animals is because that
brave girl was my great-great-great-grandmother.”
