The adult cat gave out a
painful cry, darted down
the riverbank and jumped
into the water. She
reached one of her
kittens, took it into her
mouth, and started
swimming ashore.
Peanut gave out a
thunderous bark and
started running toward the
old woman. The woman
shrieked, hit Peanut on the
head with her basket and
ran away.
Peanut sat down on the ground and shook his head. He looked at the
running woman, but a kitten’s faint meow made the him turn toward
the water. The huge dog stood up, wobbled a little on his feet, but after
a few steps, his walk became steady. He jumped into the water and
quickly reached one of the kittens.
Daniel and Bianca quickly recovered from the initial shock of what they
had seen and swam after the kittens.
The mother cat was swimming ashore with one kitten in her mouth. She
looked back at the other kittens with so much pain in her eyes that it
nearly broke Bianca’s heart. As she reached the cat, she whispered,
“Don’t worry, we’ll save your babies.”
