EXCERPT
He bit a piece of chicken off his chopstick, swallowed, and said,
“That’s why I could use a little help. This is the biggest job I’ve ever
contemplated. I understand you worked with Jack. What did he teach
you?”
I picked up my fork. “We didn’t do many parties. We usually broke
into homes when people were out. I know how to pick a lock, but I’m
not very good at swiping jewels off fingers and wrists.”
“You don’t need to be. You can be the distraction. I’m very nimble
fingered. Let me give you an example. I noticed that diamond tennis
bracelet you’re wearing. Was that a gift from your father?”
“Yes, for my sixteenth birthday.” I glanced at my right wrist, but the
bracelet was gone. For a moment, I thought I hadn’t put it on that
morning, but I remembered doing so. Panic seized me as I checked the
floor to see if it had fallen off.
“Looking for this?” My bracelet was dangling from Ace’s left
chopstick.
