Grandma’s Herbs for Asthma Grandma used and recommended the following herbs to prevent asthma attacks, and to treat and prevent asthma symptoms: Basil (ocimum basilicum) Basil relaxes both the digestive and respiratory systems. It also relieves colic, indigestion, constipation, and nausea, as well as colds, flu, cough, and asthma symptoms. This herb eases headaches (especially migraines), muscle tension, and nerve pain. Basil also boosts memory, helps the body to overcome infections, and reduces stress. Basil is toxic to mosquitoes, and therefore makes a great insect repellent. Caution: Basil lowers blood sugar levels, so use it very cautiously with insulin and oral diabetic medications for medicinal purposes in therapeutic dose. You can use it in small amounts in food. Cowslip (Primula veris) Cowslip has been used for centuries to make sedative tea. Its leaves are said to be mildly narcotic, and it is used as an herbal remedy for insomnia as well as hyperactivity. The flowers are thought to be a milder sedative, and are used to calm children and help them sleep. The roots have expectorant capabilities, and can be used to treat the common cold and flu. In Europe, cowslip is widely used for whooping cough and asthma. Some herbalists recommend it to treat Parkinson’s tremors. Caution: Cowslip should not be used by pregnant women, or persons who are using blood thinning medications. 36
