the RELATIONSHIP dance WITH VICKI MINERVA Coping when Tragedy Strikes L ast year was tough. Devastating hurricanes, fires, violence, mass shootings, the ‘Me Too’ movement and the avalanche of news about sexual assault, as well as racial and political unrest contributed to a steady stream of bad news. It can feel overwhelming with so many scary things going on in the world. We are built with the capacity to empathize with others’ suffering and loss, but with so much news available and images of the events being replayed, it can go beyond empathy to a kind of vicarious trauma for some. It’s important to develop coping strategies to protect yourself from a paralyzing sense of fear and powerlessness. First off, it’s important to recognize how you’re feeling and accept that you’re feeling it. Sadness, anger, disbelief, fear, confusion, numbness are all reasonable things to feel when news of some of these events hit. Each person responds differently. If you’ve experienced trauma, your own past experiences may be triggered as news of these events hit the media. Re- gardless of your past, manage how much you expose yourself to so you control how much detoxing you have to do. Pull yourself away from the images and com- mentary about all the gruesome details. A friend of mine has chosen to only take information about catastrophic events in printed form. Audio and video reports can be relentless. Maintain a sense of normalcy by keeping your routines. It’s a helpful reminder that not everything is out of control when normal things continue to get done. Drink plenty of water, go for a walk, and eat healthy food. You’re not to re-enforce the actions rather than helplessness in dealing with the situation. Don’t give false reassurances, focus on the here and now, “You’re safe right now and I e$ѼɽѕЁԻt+͍́䁡ٔɕѕȁ݅ɔ)́ѡѥȁͤ)ЁɅ̸ ЁݥѠ)ѕѡЁ͕͔ɽ)ѡ݅ɔȁé)=%9ͽѡ)ѼݥѠѡٕхԁٔ)%Ё䁉ѥѼɔ٥)ѡɅѡѼٕɉ锁ѡ)ѥ́ȁɍͥɝ䁕͍)ݽɥ́ɹ́ͼԁ܁ݡ)́ȁɽ́ѡ͕)ѡչхȁeФԁ)ȁݸQѥ)́Ѽɕٔѡ͕͔͹́ɕɔѡѡЁѡ́ɔ+́͡ձٔѡȁɔ)Ʌͥ́ݡ׊eɔٕȴ)5䁍ɕݕɔչݡѡѼѡѽɕQՍ)Օᥕ䁅ȸɅѡ)ѡՅՍM)Ѽɕ́ѡ͕ٕ̰ݡѡȁѡɽ՝)ݡЁѡ̤݅́ѡȴ)ɝ̀ѕаͱ)Ʌݥȁ䁙ȁչȁ̰ȁ)̰݅ѕȰѽɥѡ)хݥѠԁȁѡ́ݥѠ́ݡ)ȁɐՍѽɅกɔɔٕɉ)]ձeЁɽ͔ȁ́ѡЁѡɔ)ݽձeЁ䁵ɔѡՅ̰)eЁݽɬѽɐЁݕɥѡ)ѡѽЁݥѡЁݗe)Օѥq]t䁥ѡ͔)хѕ́Ѽɕɕͅѕ)յ٥ЁٕЁݽձ)Ս]ѥՔѼхȴ)ɡ́ٔԁ݅Ѽѡ)́Ѽ͕Ё́)ɔɔɕхѡɕɔ)͹̸)ɽѡѠ́ѡЁѡɕͽ)Ёݥٕȁɕ䁵͕͔)!ɕݥѠɅ̸)Qɔ́ݕȁȁ݅)Qѡݥͽ)ѡ)ѽѡȁѼ)ѡхѥ)ٕɍɅ̸́ѡɔ]+Aɕ͍ɕݥ)́ɕɅѡ՝ͥ՝́ԁ͕ͽѡӊe)٥ѡЁѥ̸)ѱɄѥQ䁑e)͕͠ȁչɥѼ͕ɔ)Ʌѥ́I͕)ȁѡЁѽ׊eɔѥͅ)%׊eɔЁͅȁԁɔͽ)ɥɅյѡɔɔ٥ͱ)ѡȁѽ́丁IЁѼ))ٔՙЁՅѼхЁѡ)̰ͼѡe䁅Ёȁ)ЁݕɄѥЁѥ)䁉ɕեɕѼٔѡи+Ʌ͍ɕ)ٔՕѥ́ѡЁԁ͡ձݕȁ)ɱ䁅ͥ䁅́ԁeЁٔ)ѽՍхѕ́ѡ)ѡ́ѼѡͥՅѥ)Y5لٕ́)ݽɭѡ)MѠ չ䁅ɕ)5ɥ)QɅЁȁٕȀ)啅̸!ȁՍѥ)Ց́4ظɕ)ɽձȁM䁅)45ɥ) չ͕ɽ)Mф ɄUٕͥ)٥ل)5䁝́Ѽɽ٥ԁݥѠͽɵѥԁ́ѽ́ѡЁݥԁٔȁȁɕѥ́͡ѡȁ̸݅)Q́ɵѥ́ЁՉѥєȁͽչ͕͡ձЁхЁѕиQɔɔɕхѡɅ́ѡMѠ չ䁅ɕ͡ձԁѥ)%1I=d5=I8!%10M85IQ%8) IUId5I )ѽ乍(
