Of course, not all automation is unwelcome. That same
MIT study found that while participants disapproved of self-
driving cars, they wanted assistive features that would help
keep them safe, active control, like automatic emergency
braking, lane keeping systems, and auto-park features.
Luckily, car manufacturers have several new assistive
features in the works.
By next year augmented reality dashboards, which project
directions onto the windshield so that you don’t need to
take your eyes off the road, will be incorporated into seventy
percent of all new car models. Car manufacturers are also
incorporating voice command features such as Alexa, so
that you can say something like, “find parking”, and your
car will be able to guide you to the closest, most affordable
garage based on your preferences. They are even working
on some crazy things like cars that can read your brain
waves and speed up the process of swerving or braking to
avoid collisions, and technology that would monitor heart
function and glucose levels for drivers with heart disease or
diabetes. Eventually cars will also be able to diagnose their
own mechanical problems and book themselves an appoint-
ment, as well as renew their own car insurance and look for
better deals.
The jury is still out about whether self-driving cars will
be the primary transportation mode of the future, but what
remains steadfast is our love of vehicles. Whatever the future
holds, it looks like this is a love affair for the ages.
