My Escolar (aka butterfi sh, super white tuna). Interesting! In many ways it is the perfect fi sh, cheap, sustainable, buttery and succulent. But while being one of the most delicious of all fi sh, it is banned in Italy and Japan because of potential side effects. It is fi ne in small portions, but in large portions, the oil can cause diarrhea. Oops. Sherry Hemingway The Hamachi Kama was the hit of the evening. Broiled and coated with a delightful Teriyaki sauce they are one of those eats you had to earn. There is not a lot of fish on the cheekbones so you have to pick it off carefully…you have to work for it! Sherry tells the story that as a kid on Lake Erie she was not allowed to have the cheekbones. The adults kept them to themselves, and now she knows why. The presentation of the Hamachi Kama was beautiful. The fish was meaty and simply fantastic. For our main course, we all went in a different direction. Sherry ordered four Sushi Nigiri (Fish over Rice). Specifically, she ordered Escolar, Green Lip Mussel, Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe) and Unagi (Freshwater Eel.) Connie went with Ninja Special Box (a bento box.) I ordered the SSTS Roll (Salmon, Snapper, Tuna, Lemon, Cucumber, with Spicy and Sweet Sauce) from the Regular Roll Menu. J.Chris ordered Wonderful (Baked. Inside: Creamy Crab, Avocado; On Top: Scallop, Green Onion, Tobiko with Sweet & Sour Mayo) off Ninja Sushi's Special Roll menu. Sherry’s sushi was “incredible, just divine.” The Escolar was milky delicious and according to Sherry, “So good, love it.” The Mussels from New Zealand were sweet and tender. The Roe was so fresh it popped in your mouth. The Eel was tender, mild and a “generous treat.” Connie’s Special Box was a very generous serving of shrimp and vegetable tempura with an ahi roll, salad, and rice. Connie loved the choice of being able to customize the order with just about anything on the menu. My SSTS roll has been a long- time favorite of mine, and it did not disappoint. I loved the burst of flavor when I crunched the lemon rind in the middle, and the topping was another flavor boost. J.Chris’ Wonderful was a just that, a wonderful combination. The small piece of scallop on top was a flavor delight. The whole thing was a tasty combination of multiple delights. Baked, it provided an interesting contrast to the other fresh fish flavors. We should have ended it there with a ceremonial taste of Sherry’s sake, but the dessert case called to us. We Wonderful The Roe GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN april/may 2019 ordered three of the macaroon ice cream concoctions and a deep-fried green tea ice cream. The deep fried ice cream was really different and reminded Sherry of something churro-like you get at a county fair. The macaroon ice cream is from a San Jose company called Maven’s and they were absolutely scrumptious. Each one comes in a small plastic box. We opted for Coffee Hazel Nut, Chocolate Toasted Almond, and Coconut Pineapple. We had them cut in half so everyone could get a taste. The conclusion, “Don’t leave without trying these.” They offer a wide variety of flavors that are all light and tasty. A final comment: Ninja Sushi has something for everyone and everything is excellent. If you have not tried Ninja Sushi, you should.
