Rotary Area 6 Project, Old Saint Mary
Cemetery Clean-Up
EVERY YEAR, THE AREA 6 ROTARY CLUBS (Almaden, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Gilroy
Sunrise, San Juan Bautista and Hollister) select a community service project. This
year, the project was the cleaning up of the Old Saint Mary Cemetery.
Many people do not even know that there is a small cemetery on Broadway
between Church and Hanna Streets. The cemetery has historical importance to the
South County area and is the final resting place for such notables as John Gilroy
and the Dunne, Murphy, Tennant, and Fitzgerald families.
The project focused on cleaning up the area, building a reflection area and
remapping the cemetery. Earlier this year, a community group raised funds to build
a new perimeter fence that now encompasses the cemetery.
