will alert you when the door or window
opens; keep car keys out of sight. Believe it
or not, restricting liquids a few hours before
bedtime is a good move – you do not want
them to be awake when you are asleep.
When they sundown they think nighttime
is daytime and wanderers have places to go,
battles to conquer.
Be ready. Have a list of people you can
call for help. Enlist neighbors to be on the
look-out. Keep a recent close-up photo,
updated medical info and a description of
physical traits to give to police. Be prepared
to answer questions, including but not
limited to the following: “Does he/she
suffer from delusions or paranoia?” “Is he/
she combative?” “Will he/she recognize the
neighborhood?” “Previous residences?”
Know if your loved one is right handed
or left handed – they tend to wander in the
direction of their orientation. Listen and pay
attention to what or who he shows fondness
for, he may decide to visit these places or
people. An ID bracelet would be helpful.

Association Safe Return (1 800 625-3780)
and/or work with Comfort Zone and
Comfort Zone Check-In (1 678 624-5900)
which allows you to monitor the where-
abouts of a person with dementia remotely
using web-based services. According to the
Alzheimer’s Association, 94% of wanderers
are found within 1.5 miles of their home.
You may be able to prevent wandering,
but if it occurs, just know that this is one
of those things that happens, it is not a
reflection on your ability to provide care
and protect your loved one!
