Kid’sCorner With Emma Hi, kids! Welcome to the Kids’ Corner! I can’t believe I’ve been writing this for almost a year now! It seems like just a couple weeks ago I was starting on the first article, but that was actually last summer. I’ve traversed my first year in middle school and done some other pretty awesome things this year, including taking trips with my family, getting to know some really cool kids through these interviews, and starting on a book I’ve always wanted to write. This issue we have an interview with one of my friends, Claire Burke. I hope you enjoy reading about her just as much as I enjoy knowing her! If you want to be interviewed, have a cool idea for this page, or have a beautiful work of art you want to share, just email us at info@gmhtoday.com. We really want to see what you do! A few weeks ago, I became a certified babysitter through the City of Gilroy’s SafeSitter program. I got to complete this two-day course with several of my close friends, so that was a lot of fun. Ever since I was little I wanted to babysit. I’m not kidding, when I was maybe eight I saw the SafeSitter program in the City of Gilroy’s Recreational guide and I told my mom I wanted to do that. Well, four years later, I finally have! I think this course really helped me feel confident and ready for any problems I might have in babysitting. Now that the weather is getting warmer (was it ever cold?), my family and I have enjoyed a few bike rides. We like to ride on the levee and around Mantelli Drive. One of the other things we enjoy doing, especially around sunset is taking a walk. There are some really pretty hikes, walks, and paths that you can take in and around Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The final experience I want to share with you was going to science camp. I went to Walden West Outdoor School with my class in February. That was really cool. Every day, we went on two hikes through the beautiful woods around the camp. Along with getting a lot of exercise and learning about ecosystems, I also bonded with my classmates. I’m closer to my friends whom I bunked with. I learned independence skills there, too. Science camp is an experience I’ll never forget. Looking back over this past school year is crazy. I can’t believe it’s almost over. But I look forward to this summer and seventh grade, along with all of the challenges it may bring. Meet Claire Burke Age: 10 Grade in school and school: 4th grade at St. Mary School Hobbies/interests: Gymnastics, Collecting Lambs, Violin Plans For The Summer: I’m going to Stanford Gymnastics Camp and to the Caribbean Tell me about this Lamb Collection: I have 86 stuffed lambs, but exactly 100 counting all of my erasers and glass lambs. My goal was to get 100 stuffed lambs by age 10, but I didn’t. What is your favorite subject in school and why? I like math because it challenges me. What’s your favorite movie and why? “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” because I think it’s the closest movie to the book. Anything else you’d like to tell us? When I grow up, I want to be an agricultural scientist. I suggest the Secret Series (books) by Pseudonymous Bosch. Emma Barbazette is 12 years old and in 6th grade. She was born and raised in Gilroy. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys drawing, reading, and crafting fun projects. 86 G M H T O D A Y M A G A Z I N E MAY / JUNE 2015 gmhtoday.com Kid’sCorner With Emma Hi, kids!
