Starting next year in Los Angeles, the GPI American Poker Awards will celebrate the best
players, performances, events and industry contributors in North America

t’s fairly bizarre that the birthplace of
modern poker hasn’t ever really rewarded
its top players and industry contributors
in a structured way. GPI’s group of
companies has had the pleasure of
running the European Poker Awards for
the past 13 years, and it’s been a positive
experience, rewarding the game’s best
players, events and performances. But,
without a North American counterpart, it
always felt like something was missing. Now,
with poker on the eve of a new resurgence in
the US, it’s the perfect time to change this.
The Global Poker Index (GPI) – the poker
ranking authority – is proud to announce the
upcoming launch of the GPI American Poker
Awards, to be held in February 2015 in Los
Angeles. The choice of location was easy. LA
is already home to some of the world’s most
iconic ceremonies – the Oscars, Grammys,
Emmys, and others – and we don’t think

poker deserves any less. We believe that
promoting the game of poker and its star
players is the best way to help the poker
community to grow. We’re happy to make the
investment to make this happen.
The GPI European Poker Awards have set a
benchmark of success. Our American Poker
Awards will follow in their footsteps, featuring
a similar structure with nomination panels
and independent juries to decide winners,
and best players determined impartially
using GPI scores. The best players from a
diverse array of categories will be honored,
as well as North America’s best poker venues,
poker events, online initiatives and poker
innovations, among many other categories.
This will be more than a yearly rendezvous
for the poker industry, with a charity poker
event included that’s designed with fun and
prizes in mind, but the support of good
causes at the forefront. We’ll be announcing
details and partners for this unique event
soon, but I can already count it as a success
given the feedback we’ve already received
from every stakeholder we’ve approached.
