BEST PROVIDERS OF SPECIALIST CARE

ORTHOPAEDIC SERVICE PROVIDER OF THE YEAR IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC

KPJ TAWAKKAL KL SPECIALIST HOSPITAL
KPJ Tawakkal KL Specialist Hospital in Kuala Lumpur first marked itself out as a centre of excellence in orthopaedics in 2010 , when it opened a dedicated ward for musculoskeletal treatment .
The tertiary private hospital has received numerous awards and accolades for its expertise in the field , including this year ’ s Global Health Asia-Pacific Award for Orthopaedic Service Provider of the Year .
“ These achievements are in line with our aims to offer world-class orthopaedic healthcare services in Malaysia and beyond its borders with our wide range of services , state-of-theart facilities , top-notch orthopaedic consultants , and team of specialised and dedicated experts in physical and rehabilitation medicine .
“ We also offer a seamless experience for international patients seeking our services , and as a result , we have recorded an average recovery rate of 96-98 percent in all orthopaedic cases on a yearly basis ,” said Dr Chan Kheng Khim , KPJ Tawakkal KL ’ s Medical Director .
Among KPJ Tawakkal KL ’ s recent successes was the first anterior minimally invasive surgery for total hip replacement in Malaysia . The hospital lists among its experts a pioneer of spine surgery in Malaysia , Dr Abdul Hadi , who can treat chronic pain using minimally invasive surgery , radio frequency ablation , and laser spinal decompression .
Another consultant , Dr Lopez Mohan , has a knee replacement success rate on par with other leading orthopaedic centres around the world . While Dr Abdul Muiz , a sub-specialist in
Dato ’ Mohamad Farid Bin Salim and Dr G Ruslan Nazaruddin Simanjuntak
arthroplasty and arthroscopy , has seen enormous success in reconstructing joints and bone abnormalities .
KPJ Tawakkal KL has invested more than RM22 million ( US $ 5.4 million ) over the last five years on facilities and equipment for its orthopaedic centre .
It now houses Malaysia ’ s first digital operating theatre , with its own dedicated navigation system . It is also among the first facilities in the country to have bought state-of-the art orthopaedic rehabilitation equipment , including the AlterG antigravity treadmill , Bionic Leg , and BTE Primus Work Simulator .
Although KPJ Tawakkal KL is a fullservice hospital , orthopaedic surgery accounted for more than 40 percent of the 5,000 surgeries performed there last year . The most common were arthroscopy , open reduction internal fixation , total knee and hip replacement .
To stay ahead of its competitors in the field of orthopaedics and other disciplines , the hospital now makes it necessary for all its consultants to attend weekly continuous medical education sessions to update their clinical knowledge . This is far beyond what many other private hospitals mandate for their clinical staff .
At the same time , KPJ Tawakkal KL ’ s facilities and services have been certified by national and international accreditation bodies , including the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health and TUV Rheinland . The hospital also has ambitious plans for expansion , including an additional 24 consultant clinics in the next year , followed by over 120 new beds over the subsequent three years . KPJ Tawakkal KL also intends to introduce another eight resident consultants in 2021 and an additional 24 by the end of 2023 . Eight operating theatre rooms will also be added , alongside 10 more intensive care and 14 high-dependency unit beds .
Over a period when hospital income is expected to increase at an annual rate of seven percent , the upgraded hospital will be able to cater to more health tourists , with an estimated increase of about 15-20 percent , once Malaysia ’ s borders open again .
