With its one stop cancer centre , Sunway Medical Centre continues to be a frontrunner in radiation oncology , which uses radiation to kill cancer cells . Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments used to fight cancer at Sunway Medical Centre , with an estimated 500 new patients each year receiving the therapy either alone or in combination with other treatments .
In the Asia-Pacific , most patients are typically treated with a “ one-machinefits-all ” approach . However , similar tumour types may have different results after radiation therapy , with improvement seen in one patient , but not in another . Clinical oncologists at Sunway Cancer Centre hope to change this approach with radiation therapy .
On top of the existing Linear Accelerator TrueBeam sTx , which was installed in 2016 , the hospital has added two of the latest leading-edge treatment solutions – the Gamma Knife and the TomoTherapy systems . These satisfy all the external beam radiation delivery needs of a comprehensive cancer centre and give clinical oncologists flexible and personalised treatment options in their pursuit of optimal treatment outcomes .
“ Our oncology unit is one of the centres of excellence we have built over time , and now includes our Nuclear Medicine Centre . It ’ s a one-stop cancer centre where we are building the whole ecosystem from prevention , detection , and treatment , as well as counselling and palliative care , when it ’ s needed ,” said Sunway Medical Chief Executive Officer , Bryan Lin , on receiving this year ’ s Global Health Asia-

Sunway Cancer Centre is now the one-stop centre in clinical oncology , surgical oncology , and haematooncology . A full range of screening , diagnostic , and staging facilities is available with advanced technology such as a flash speed dual source CT scanner , 3-Tesla MRI , 4D PET / CT scan system , and Spect-CT scans . The centre also offers a comprehensive range of treatments , such as chemotherapy , radiation therapy , radiosurgery , hormone therapy , and target therapy . Complementary services to assist patients such as counselling , palliative care , patient support group , nutrition are also provided . In addition , molecular tests are developed to support the early detection of cancers .

As part of its mission to care for patients at every step in their cancer journey , Sunway runs a multidisciplinary team of haematologists , medical and clinical oncologists , and nuclear medicine physicians . It also retains a roster of qualified nurses trained in the field and well-versed in the administration of chemotherapy drugs who work alongside other health experts .
“ It ’ s not only about technology , but also about the talent we have . We ’ ve recruited Malaysian doctors who have all kinds of experience in all types of cancers . We also support these doctors with the allied health and nursing support that ’ s required by them to carry out the treatment of these cancer patients .
“ In addition to this , we have a tumour board which meets on a weekly basis to review the cancer cases in the hospital . It ’ s a multi-disciplinary approach that we employ to provide the best options that are available in cancer treatment .
