“ Traditionally , PGT was performed with an IVF cycle to increase pregnancy success rates and reduce miscarriages . Now , couples who want to screen their embryos for hereditary disorders and genetic mutations choose to undergo IVF treatment . Disorders that can be screened include thalassaemia , cystic fibrosis , sickle cell disease , and haemophilia A and B , among others ,” said Dr Kannappan Palaniappan , Clinical Director , Consultant Obstetrician , Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist at Sunway Fertility Centre .
“ Although the coronavirus has changed things , the centre has still been able to continue with its services . We ’ ve innovated , and now communicate actively with our patients through teleconsultations . It helps that our specialists are able to speak a number of languages fluently .
There are facilities within the hospital for patients to quarantine themselves before starting treatment . Having said that , our patients ’ safety is our priority , and we practice all the precautionary SOPs and guidelines as outlined by the Ministry of Health ,” Dr Kannappan continued .
