SUBANG JAYA MEDICAL CENTRE

Founded in 1985 , Subang Jaya Medical Centre ( SJMC ) is a leading healthcare provider in Malaysia and one that has played a key role in helping catapult the country to the top of global healthcare rankings by consistently setting medical firsts , according to Trish Hogan , the hospital ’ s CEO , in an interview with Global Health Asia-Pacific .
“ The first open-heart surgery , paediatric liver transplant , stem cell transplant , adult and paediatric bone marrow transplants , and awake craniotomy ( brain neurosurgery ) in the country were performed at SJMC ,” she said . “ To-date , the hospital has performed over 500 successful bone marrow transplants for both adult and paediatric patients .”
As a company always focused on introducing the latest medical services , SJMC was the first private hospital in Malaysia to set up a comprehensive
Blood Diseases Centre , a Nuclear Medicine Centre , and a Vascular Interventional Radiology ( VIR ) Centre . “ The hospital has continuously evolved to offer the full spectrum of health services designed to address all aspects of health and well-being ,” said Hogan .
It ’ s therefore no surprise that SJMC received the Best Hospital of the Year in Malaysia Award in 2019 and 2020 , while winning the Prime Minister ’ s Quality Award twice , a coveted recognition in Malaysia . It ’ s also earned the seal of approval of the Joint Commission International , one of the leading global organisations that certify healthcare providers .
“ With SJMC being a JCI-accredited hospital , the local and international community can continue to be confident that the hospital provides the highest standards of care and best practices in quality and patient safety . As of November 2020 , there were only 13 hospitals in Malaysia that were JCI-accredited , strongly underscoring the world-class healthcare services and sophisticated infrastructure that SJMC has to offer its customers ,” said Hogan .
The hospital can boast such advanced medical technologies as the SOMATOM Drive Dual Source CT Scanner , which offers accurate diagnostic images for several specialities , including paediatrics , cardiology , and oncology , with reduced radiation , thus improving its safety and without the need for giving patients a drug to calm them down . While standard imaging technology requires patients to hold their breath and stay put once they ’ re being analysed , the SOMATOM Drive Dual Source CT Scanner can capture accurate images even if patients move or breath heavily due to stress or fear , making the whole diagnostic process easier and quicker .
Another state-of-the-art technology available at SJMC is the BrainLab Airo Mobile Intraoperative CT Scanner System , which can guide neurosurgeons in real time during complex brain operations to improve surgical outcomes and speed up procedures . Besides being instrumental in performing complex brain surgeries , the technology can also be used to improve outcomes in spine , ear , and nose , as well as orthopaedic procedures .
As an added positive for local patients , SJMC houses an emergency department that operates around the clock to respond to any type of emergency . The department ’ s team comprises experienced nurses and doctors under the direction of a consultant emergency physician specialist . To make sure patients arrive at the hospital swiftly and safely , a dedicated ambulance service is also available around the clock .
Though the hospital already offers services across over 45 major medical disciplines and sub-disciplines , introducing new treatment options is always a priority . Some of the new clinics and services , for example , will now include a neurospinal clinic of excellence and a new haemodialysis unit , said Rachel Woo , Director of Commercial and Financial Services at SJMC .
