India , a country rich in culture and tradition , has the second largest population in the world , with over 1.2 billion people . India is part of the continent of Asia . Most of India forms a peninsula , which means it is surrounded by water on three sides . The world ' s highest mountain range , the Himalayas , is located in the northern part of India . The tallest peaks of the Himalayas are covered with snow year-round ; the word Himalaya literally means " the home of snow ." India is home to a wide range of environments and ecosystems , from high , snow-capped mountains to tropical rainforests and from hot and cold deserts to lush , fertile plains and valleys . Due to its location , India also experiences periods of extremely heavy rain called monsoons .
