VANDANA SHIVA

Dr . Vandana Shiva is an Indian scientist and environmental activist . She trained as a Physicist and obtained her PhD in quantum theory . After completing her studies she began to work in the areas of science and environment , and was particularly interested in environmental policy ( the rules and regulations within a country or region that govern how wildlife and ecosystems can be used ). After working and studying in many places around the world , Dr . Shiva founded a research institute in India to study the most urgent ecological and social issues .
Dr . Shiva is particularly well known for her strong voice related to seed freedom and the protection of native seeds ( the seed from plants native to India ) from eradication . She has worked to establish seed banks in India in cooperation with local organizations and farmers . She is also well known for writing about sustainable agriculture , biodiversity and genetic engineering . Dr . Shiva works with governments around the world to help them develop policies and regulations to improve the health of their ecosystems . For example , she is currently working with the Government of Bhutan to make Bhutan 100 % organic .
Dr . Shiva has won many awards and accolades . In 2003 , Time Magazine named her an environmental hero . Known for her brave and courageous voice , in 2010 , Forbes Magazine named her one of the most powerful women on the planet . She is also the author of numerous books and articles and is a frequent public speaker .
