Select a quiet space, free of distraction, and
a time of day when your child is settled and
relatively content. The duration of your practice
will vary depending upon the age of your child,
but as you progress together, your child’s ability
to sit for longer periods may become apparent.
Yours may as well. This particular Metta only
takes a few minutes, which is a good starter for
beginners. Once you become comfortable with
the meditation, you can customize your own
by changing the words to fit your family and
meditation intentions.
CULTIVATING
COMPASSION
FOR THE EARTH
Sit comfortably on a cushion or lie down on your
back. The intention is for the body to feel at ease
and the mind to be alert. Invite your child to close
his eyes and feel his breath moving in and out of
his body. Ask him to notice any sensations in the
body. This helps to tune into his physical self.
Explain that metta is a practice of first making
wishes for our own well-being and then for the
well-being of others, all creatures and the Earth.
