AT BLCI,
THE COMMUNITY
GRADUATES!
G
raduation season is upon us! It’s time to stock up
on the festive balloons, greeting cards, and flowers!
Soon, Yaxche Morales will be walking across a
stage to celebrate an important milestone. Although
she is moving from elementary to middle school, as
a first-generation, co llege-bound student, Yaxche will be one step
closer to breaking the cycle of poverty in her family.
At Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI), graduation season is what
they are all about. Since 1996, BLCI has been preparing students
to be the first in their families to go to college, through after school
programs that begin in third grade. While the average parent
education level is 5th grade, to date, 100% of BLCI students have
graduated from high school and 100% enroll in college, but BLCI
celebrates more than that.

to high school and high school to college. The college graduates
come back to offer words of inspiration to those who are coming
up behind them. Even BLCI parents graduate with their GED’s,
Associates Degrees, and on occasion, Bachelor’s Degrees,
because they have been inspired by the success of their children.
At BLCI the community graduates!
This year all BLCI high school seniors have all been accepted to
great institutions of higher learning and are looking forward to
using their education to improve their future for themselves and
their community. Through higher education, BLCI creates change
agents who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
BLCI would like to share the pride of this graduation season with
all of the generous San Diegans who, through their gifts of time,
talent and treasure, have helped to make its students’ college
dreams a reality.
