Salud SUMMER SKIN B Y ANGELI CA GAVALDON W ith summer just around the corner, most of us are looking forward to longer, warmer days, lounging in the pool and taking the kids to the beach. This time of year, we must take all precautions and be protected from the sun. If anyone can tell you how damaging the sun is for your skin, it would be me. My whole career has been outside including hours and hours of hitting tennis balls under the burning rays. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I did wear sunblock, the sun took its toll. However, on the plus side, I do also get a lot of vitamin D. In fact, my doctor is always astonished at how amazing my levels are. Vitamin D is essential for maintaining good health as it plays a substantial role in maintaining the proper levels of phosphorous in the blood and calcium for good bone health. According to Medical News Today, it even influences the expressions of genes in cancer development as well as supports lung and cardiovascular health, among many other benefits. 16 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2018 Here are my top tips for keeping your body and skin healthy throughout the SUMMER: 1. WEAR SUNBLOCK and a HAT If you plan on being outside all day, you need to reapply sunblock every two hours. Make sure it is at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV RAYS. If you have sensitive skin like I do, a mineral base works best so your skin does not react. It is best to stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. but come on, who wants to be at the beach at 8 a.m. or 5 p.m.? Just make sure you protect yourself! 2. EXFOLIATE AND HYDRATE SKIN Skin gets more dehydrated during summer. To keep your skin smooth, make sure you exfoliate in the shower to scrub off dead skin cells. You can either buy a product or make your own at home. A simple one I like is coconut oil and sugar, however, there are hundreds of recipes online that you can make at home. 3. DRINK A LOT OF WATER This is very important. As we tend to sweat more and our bodies get wet, we are more prone to dehydration. Even if you do not feel thirsty, make sure to stay hydrated. 4. CHANGE UP YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE Take advantage of the beautiful weather by changing up your gym routine. You can go outside to walk, hike, run or even go swimming. If you are feeling especially adventurous, maybe take a surfing class. Whatever you do, just don’t forget the sunblock. With these tips and the many exciting summer and family-friendly activities San Diego has to offer, you should be able to enjoy a healthy, happy season.
