Now celebrating its 30th year, the American Indian community
has celebrated its heritage at an empowering and festive
event. Pow Wows are so much more than a social event; they
provide an opportunity to raise and share cultural awareness
within the greater San Diego community, a learning experience
for American Indian children, a remembrance of times past for
elders and a spiritual experience for everyone. For all these
reasons, SDAIHC is honored to carry on this wonderful tradition
for our community.
The Balboa Park Pow Wow will take place on Mother’s Day
Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, May 12th - 13th from 10
a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the southwest corner of Park Boulevard
and Presidents Way. As is custom, the event will open with
Kumeyaay Bird Singers in recognition of their place as San
Diego’s “first people”, followed by traditional gourd dancing,
grand entry and inter-tribal dancing throughout the afternoon.
Balboa Park Pow Wow is sponsored by the San Diego American
Indian Health Center in partnership with the Soaring Eagles
Youth Dance Group. Vendors of Native American ancestry will
sell authentic jewelry, clothing, bags, blankets and more. On
Saturday, they will honor Wilbur Solomon, a member of the
community and veteran, for his service. On Sunday, all Mothers
present will be asked to participate in an honoring ceremony.
Everyone is invited to attend the Balboa Park Pow Wow for a
wonderful family experience.
To promote a healthier living environment and community,
staff from SDAIHC’s medical, dental, behavioral health, and
youth center teams will be present to acquaint the community
with its many services.
