Mazunte and San Agustinillo
Adjacent to each other, Mazunte
and San Agustinillo overlook
the Pacific Ocean and are considered the more ‘artsy’ and
backpacker-friendly towns in
Oaxaca. In Mazunte, I highly
recommend taking a 30 minute
walk to Punta Cometa to admire
the sunset. Later, you can head
down to Mermejita, a beach
with the wildest waves in sight,
beautiful to watch but dangerous to swim, and have a walk
on its black sand beaches. San
Agustinillo is the quieter of the
two towns with less tourists and
more locals. Here you will find
friendlier waves and a range of
local food. Try some camarones
al mojo de ajo (garlic shrimp) at
Restaurante el Pelicano. For a
comfortable stay and the best
coffee in the area, go to Posada
Paloma where you will enjoy a
hammock, a good book and the
company of it’s Manager, Diego,
who has interesting stories
about his Zapotec community.
