Steps for Sprouting
Containers
• Rinse with cool water well until the water
runs clear.
If you have the ability to rinse your sprouts
3 or more times a day, sprouting in a colander
covered with a dish towel will be the easiest
option! If you’ll only be rinsing twice a day,
it’s better to use a large, wide mouth glass jar
(covered with cloth as well) in order to have
the sprouts retain sufficient moisture.
• Soak. Place the seeds in a large bowl
or glass jar and cover with 2-3 times as much
cool water. Let sit overnight.
• Rinse in the morning with higher pressure, cool
water for 2 minutes. Strain out any excess water
and place in sprouting container (options below)
- AND repeat this step 2-3 times a day to ensure
the seeds stay moist and clean.
What do sprouts like?
Oxygen. Make sure your sprouts get adequate
air circulation!
Darkness. Don’t lock them up in a closet (this
limits airflow). Put them on the corner of your
kitchen counter furthest away from outdoor light.
Moisture. But not too much. Depending on your
sprouting container, this balance can be tricky.
You want to ensure that the sprouts are never sitting in their own water but have enough to stay
moist between rinses. Keep an eye on this!
My favorite seeds to sprout are large green lentils.
Harvest them after 3 days or so when they have
short little tails (see below) and turn them into
delicious, healthy and vegetarian taco meat!
