Growing up in Gilroy

Hi ! My name is Riley .

By Kelly Barbazette

You might remember me — I was born in this great town and I love growing up here ! I ’ m now 8 and this summer will be my best one yet — there is always something fun to do .

I am so excited that my favorite season is finally here . Ever since I ’ ve been a second grader , school has been hard work – reading , writing , science and math ! But now I get to take a nearly three-month break with trips to the beach , sleepovers with friends , and jumping in the swimming pool .
Speaking of swimming pools , Royal Pools on Leavesley Road just finished putting a pool in our backyard just in time for the hot weather ! My miniature Dachshund puppy Daisy , who is now 2 , loves to swim as much as I do !
My Dad says it ’ s time for me to learn some more swim strokes so I get to take swim lessons again with Coach Jeff Ross . He is a great swim teacher ! He says this summer I ’ ll learn how to dive , and do the backstroke , freestyle and butterfly . I can ’ t wait to perfect all of them in time for the Gilroy Youth Triathlon later this summer . This is the third year the city has put on this event . Children ages 5 to 13 will be swimming , biking and running on July 9 th . It starts at the Gilroy High School Pool on West Tenth Street . My Dad said he signed me up through the Gilroy Recreation Department .
There also are so many fun summer camps to choose from ! One of my favorite spots is Discovery Point Learning Center on Church Street . The teachers there are always whipping up some fun and this summer is no exception . Throughout the summer , each weeklong day camp has really fun themes , like music , rockets , art , dinosaurs and cooking . I definitely want to brush up on my cooking and learn more about the ocean . My Mom registers me online for those sessions – I can ’ t wait !
I get to do more crafty fun projects at a day camp through the city of Gilroy at the Wheeler Community Center multipurpose room . My Dad signed me up through the city of Gilroy ’ s web site . They offer so many fun summer classes for kids and grownups !
One fun event that my parents never miss each summer is the Garlic City Fun Run and Car Show . Celebrating its 10 th year , it is held June 25 th in downtown Gilroy . We get to see lots of classic cars , hear free music on three stages , shop , dance and eat . It is so much fun !
Another favorite downtown spot of my family is the Gilroy Demonstration Garden . My Mom says this summer I ’ ll learn how to plant my own vegetables and help make a yummy snack from goodies found in the garden ! The garden is filled with produce and herbs and sits on the corner of Eigleberry Street between Sixth and Seventh streets . They always have a garden stand open on Saturdays where you can buy seasonal produce !
A lot of the area churches offer free and discounted summer day camps , too . It ’ s a great place to see my friends , do crafts , play games and sing songs . I ’ m especially excited to return to Gilroy Presbyterian Church ’ s day camp . We had so much fun there last summer !
My Mom and Dad say I get to go camping for real this time in a tent and everything ! We ’ re going to drive up Highway 152 just west of town to Mt . Madonna County Park . I ’ ve only been there to hike during the day , but tonight my Mom and Dad are taking me camping there ! I help them set up our tent on our spot that comes with a barbecue pit , food locker and picnic table . We are right next to 14 miles of trails where we go hiking the next morning after sleeping under the stars . Daisy slept really well in our tent and only woke up once when she thought she heard an animal . She loved to sniff our hiking trail the next day !
