LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD UROLOGY

DR BENG KIAN SIEW JIMMY
For his decades of contributions to the field of urology , Dr Beng Kian Siew Jimmy is highly deserving of this year ’ s Lifetime Achievement Award for Urology . He has not only taught and trained generations of urologists , but his pioneering work in non-surgical treatments for urological maladies has been recognised by numerous global bodies for its revolutionary impact on the field .
Dr Beng graduated from the King Edward College of Medicine , University of Singapore in 1970 . In his final undergraduate year , he was awarded the Nuffield Foundation Scholarship which supported a student exchange between the University of St Andrews in Scotland and the Medical School at St Mary ’ s in London . The selection was based on a student ’ s academic and leadership qualities .
After graduation , he served as a medical officer in the Singapore Armed Forces ( SAF ) and rose to the rank of major as a volunteer in the Field Hospital of the SAF . Upon completion of his National Service , he joined the National University of Singapore as a Lecturer in the Department of Surgery . He was awarded a scholarship for urology and was made a Fellow of Urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital . On returning after his urological training , he was involved in many aspects of urological work and published several papers on transurethral surgery . He was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer .
In 1978 , Dr Beng resigned from

the University and went into private practice . In 1985 , when the first Dornier Lithotripter was introduced in the Asia-Pacific region , Dr Beng was a member of the pioneering team . This was a machine for non-surgical pulverisation of kidney stones by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy ( ESWL ). Dr Beng lectured extensively on ESWL , presented many papers , and was a regular feature at lectures in Malaysia , Thailand , the Philippines , and Indonesia .
In the field of shock wave lithotripsy , Dr Beng established the first Office Lithotripter Centre in the world . This treatment was extended as an office procedure , and a paper on the experiences of the Office Lithotripter Center was presented at the World Congress in Lithotripsy in November
1997 in Melbourne . In 1987 , he became a founding member of the Singapore Urological Association . He served as President from 1988 to 1990 and , in 1992 , served as Chairman of the Tenth World Congress on Endourology ( WCE ) and ESWL . The congress attracted over 800 participants worldwide and was held at the Raffles Convention Centre . For this contribution , he was awarded special recognition by the WCE body in a subsequent meeting in Genoa , Italy .
In 2007 , he became a member of the group planning the Farrer Park Hospital Complex ( medical suites , hospital , and hotel ). He held a directorship at the Farrer Park Company for over a decade before stepping down . Dr Beng contributed to many of the successful projects of the hospital and hotel .
Dr Beng ’ s second major non-surgical treatment contribution in urology was in the non-surgical treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia ( BPH ). In July 2019 , he introduced the Prolieve Thermodilatation System for treating enlarged prostates with obstructive problems . Elderly patients can now be successfully treated with relief of their troublesome symptoms after only a one-hour outpatient procedure . The ongoing programme has been accepted by many specialist urologists in private practice , with increasing numbers receiving the treatment . Dr Beng has had a remarkable career over five decades as a Consultant Urologist and is currently still active in clinical practice .
