Learn from the Experts
The Learn from the Experts (LFE) classes are offered in partnership with the
Geneva Park District, Forest Preserve District of Kane County, and the St. Charles Park District.
Dragonflies and Damselflies:
“Triassic Park” Survivors
Ages 18+
1 Class
Learn how to identify our native dragonflies
and damselflies and attract them to your
local pond or wetland. During this two-
hour workshop ,presented by environmental
biologist Cathy White, you’ll learn about these
amazing creatures and then get the chance to
examine them in their native habitat while we
explore the nearby aquatic systems. (TB)

A Sense of Place:
Burlington Prairie
Ages 18+
Grasses and wildflowers carpet the landscape
of Burlington Prairie. A portion of the preserve
is virgin prairie, where the ground has never
been broken by a plow. Learn about the
natural and cultural history of the special
place with Senior Ranger Mandy Morgan and
naturalist Valerie Blaine. As we walk along
the trail, we’ll examine the soils, wildflowers,
and wildlife that are part of Burlington’s story.
Space is limited due to the sensitivity of the
area. Instructor: Valerie Blaine, Forest Preserve District

Fall Tree Identification
Ages 18+
How can you tell a sugar maple from a silver maple? Why is that called a bitternut hickory, and not a
shagbark? Who knew there were over a dozen different oaks in Kane County! In this class, we’ll take
a walk on the wooded trails to learn the common hardwood trees. You will learn several methods
of tree identification. The class will include some introductory terminology and an overview of tree
identification resources. Instructor: Valerie Blaine, Forest Preserve District of Kane County
