The Learn from the Experts (LFE) classes are offered in partnership with the
Geneva Park District, Forest Preserve District of Kane County,
and the St. Charles Park District.

Several classes require hiking, standing, and being outdoors.

The Natural History of Oaks
Ages 18 & up
1 Class
The oak is known as the King of the Forest. It
has influenced cultures in both the Old and
the New World for millennia. Learn about the
fascinating story of the genus Quercus, with
special emphasis on our native species. We’ll
discuss the attributes of oaks that make these
trees valuable ecologically, commercially, and
culturally. The first part of the program will
be held indoors. We will then head out to the
woods to see a variety of species of oaks in
their native habitat. Instructor: Valerie Blaine, Forest

Native Plants in Their Prime
Ages 18 & up

Discover fall-blooming native species in the
garden. Learn how to manage the garden when
the growing season draws to a close. Landscape
Architect Trish Beckjord will share her extensive
knowledge of landscaping with natives, with a
particular emphasis on the garden in autumn.
The class will be held both indoors and

How can you tell a sugar maple from a silver
maple? Why is that called a bitternut hickory,
and not a shagbark? Who knew there were over
a dozen different oaks in Kane County! In this
class, we’ll take a walk on the wooded trails to
learn the common hardwood trees. You will learn
several methods of tree identification. The class
will include some introductory terminology and
an overview of tree identification resources.
