West of Life
Zied Ben Romdhane
Two years after his participation to the project Views of Tunisia, Zied Ben Romdhane points his lens at the mining
region of Gafsa and offers us a series of remarkably intimist photographs. The series West of Life sheds light
on the universe of people in Gafsa, Redayef, Mettlaoui and Oumm Laarayes, burdened by isolation, insecurity,
pollution and ethnic conflicts.
It took two years and many week-ends to the photojournalist to soak himself in the reality of these ignored cities. With disarming
simplicity and great finesse, the series West of Life draws attention to those workers who came from Algeria, Morocco, Libya
and other Tunisian regions in order to feed the rich coastal region. Between desolate landscapes, precarious lifestyle and a few
strange portraits, West of Life presents a unique testimony of the phosphate mines that cannot leave anyone indifferent. I
