It is the exception that proves the rule, as the

puisque son architecte n’est pas portugais,
mais l’édifice est indéniablement l’un des
projets phares de ces dernières années au
Portugal.
Inaugurée en 2005, la Casa da Musica est
rapidement devenue un des symboles de la
ville et a été adoptée par tous ses habitants.
L'architecture de ce bâtiment est surprenante:
les parois blanches, les vastes surfaces
vitrées (40 tonnes de verre au total), le sol en
aluminium et les lignes anguleuses contrastent
avec la pierre grise et les volutes baroques de
la ville. Imaginé pour accueillir aussi bien
de grands concerts symphoniques que de la
musique de chambre ou des sessions de jazz,
elle étonne par l’acoustique incroyable de
ses deux salles de concerts. On aime aussi le
petit clin d’œil à l’architecture traditionnelle
portugaise dans le salon d’honneur dont la
décoration rappelle la tradition ornementale
portugaise de l’azulejo, mais de manière

inaugurated in 2005, is undeniably one of Portugal’s
flagship projects.
The past decades have seen frantic attempts by
architects to escape the domination of the "shoe-
box" concert hall. The Casa da Musica, the new
home of the National Orchestra of Porto, stands
on a new public square in the historic Rotunda da
Boavista. It has a distinctive faceted form, made of
white concrete, which remains solid and believable
in an age of too many icons. Inside, the elevated
1,300-seat (shoe box-shaped) Grand Auditorium has
corrugated glass facades at either end that open the
hall to the city and offer Porto itself as a dramatic
backdrop for large symphony concerts, jazz or other
performances, relying on outstanding acoustics.
The VIP lounge, was created to be a sort of calling
card of Casa da Musica, a distinguished and
particularly formal space within the institution, whose
redux interior design recalls Portuguese Azulejo
