El Jem amphitheatre
l Jem amphitheatre celebrates this year the 30rd edition of the international festival
of symphonic music.
Also called the Thysdrus Colosseum, El Jem amphitheatre bears witness to the
Roman architecture in Tunisia. It is ranked third in importance after the Colosseum in
Rome and the amphitheatre in Capua. The amphitheatre celebrated last summer the
30rd edition of El Jem international festival of symphonic music.
It once housed gladiators fights as well as chariot races and other circus games.
Since 1985, it has been the performance venue for El Jem international festival of symphonic music, hosting
nearly 530 000 visitors each year. Presumably built during the first third of the 3rd century, it is located on a
plain at the centre of Tunisia, built entirely from cut stone, it is not set against a hill. The amphitheatre is similar
to the Colosseum in Rome without being an exact replica. This huge monument elliptical in shape is 148
metres long, 122 metres large and 36 metres high. The most famous Roman monument in Tunisia is also the
best preserved in North Africa. The amphitheatre has even been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Vestige of one of the greatest civilisations and true architectural splendour, El Jem amphitheatre remains one
of the most beautiful monuments in Tunisia and in the world. I
