Charles Gleyre (1806-1874). Le romantique repenti
Le Musée d’Orsay accueille la première exposition monographique française consacrée à l’artiste Charles
Gleyre. Peintre suisse précurseur du courant symboliste, celui-ci occupe une place majeure dans la peinture académique à Paris au milieu du XIXème siècle. Ses peintures abordent des sujets majoritairement
mythologiques et font preuve d’une perfection lisse qui lui a valu à tort, une réputation d’ « esthète froid,
conventionnel et aveugle aux révolutions de son temps. »
L’exposition « Le repenti romantique », placée sous le signe du spleen et de l’idéal, propose une relecture
de l’œuvre de Charles Gleyre et met en lumière les contradictions de l’artiste comme de son œuvre, miroir
des illusions de l’académisme. I Du 10 mai au 11 septembre 2016

dedicated to artist Charles Gleyre.
Swiss
painter,
precursor
of
the
symbolist movement, he plays a major
role in academic painting in Paris in
the middle of the 19th century. His
paintings present mainly mythological
scenes and show smooth perfection,
which led us to believe that he was
“cold, conventional aesthete, blind to
the revolutions of his time.“
The exhibition “The repentant romantic“,
placed under the sign of spleen and
ideal, offers a new perspective on
Charles Gleyre’s work, mirror of the
illusions of academicism, and highlights
the artist’s contradictions. I From 10
